Last time I tried online I get disconnected pretty quickly. Many players have reported the same issue. If you download a certain mod that I can not remember the name of, it supposedly fixes the issues.

The servers used to be unplayable and required the Northstar client. However, they have since been fixed and you can now access multiplayer through the vanilla game without any additional mods required.

I have no problems connecting from "vanilla" TF2 to an online multiplayer match. And I never tried that before, nor did I install any mods.

There is a known bug where you need to change region before it will connect. Experienced it like a year ago when I hopped on shortly after they finally stopped the ddos attacks. You can try the northstar thing, but I think its a unique client with its own progression and servers

The fix that helped me

On the Windows Search, look for "Edit The System Environment Variables"
Select “Environment Variables” in the “Advanced” tab
Select “New…” under “System variables”
Input the text below and select “OK”

Variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Variable value: ~0x200000200000000
