TF2 got:-
>great gunplay and punchy guns.
>a modern classic campaign.
>did something no other shooter did by having two type of combat on two different level (advanced nimble pilot movement and slow hefty titans combat)
>an actual interesting and bit grounded universe (before the late Apex lore ruined it)
you want a proof that this game could be great. look no further than apex. a gutted down version of TF2.
Respawn wanted EA to delay it.
Respawn finally fixed the servers. People have been wanting to play but instead of fixing the servers Respawn focused on Apex. They finally applied the server fixes they used on Apex to TF2. Now the online is playable without needing to use Northstar or just automatically jumping into find a match and praying you find one before your timer hits 0.
