I really like your insight. Thanks for the response. I need to try more Titans but I'm simply too addicted to Tone's 40mm. It's the only thing I really like about him at all because I'm good at sniping pilots with it from all my Titanfall 1 experience. Just another reason I wish we had loadouts again instead of the (in my opinion) unnecessary class system...
Each titan has their strengths and weaknesses, and while they may not seem obvious at first, you learn them over time. Tone is lacking in answers to aggressive pushes or pinches, so Ronin is a great counter to her. Scorch is also a pretty interesting answer too; you have never felt euphoria until you bounced a gas canister behind a particle wall, and his thermal shield is a great offensive and defensive tool against one (unless they use core, in which case, you're boned).
There are many counters to each titan, and it comes down to learning how their kit works and how it doesn't.
Ronin going up against Legion, Scorch and Monarch is dumb.
Ion going up against Scorch, Legion and Ronin is dumb.
Scorch going up against anyone at long range is dumb.
Northstar going up anyone at close range is dumb.
Monarch going up against Legion, Tone or Ion is dumb.
Legion going up against Scorch, Ion or Northstar is dumb.
Now, while the list above is how I picture things in my head, there are two MAJOR factors that come into play when deciding to engage a titan, besides player skill because the rock paper scissors nature of the titan classes closes the gap.
1 - Current health. If a Scorch, Legion or Monarch are down to two thirds of their health, a Ronin can make easy work out of them. Depends on terrain and overall skill. If a full health Ronin is dashing around the map and bumps into a Legion, Scorch or Monarch, chances are it will die unless it hits and runs.
2 - Distance. Regardless of map, what seals a titan's fate most of the time is judging the distance, between them and an enemy titan, wrong. You are a Monarch, staring down the barrel of a Northstar's gun. You won't win because NS is already primed and aiming your weak point. If you are a Tone and you find yourself hugging a Legion, you will lose because Legion's gun is already primed and shooting you. You are a Legion. You are priming your smart gun but Ion can simply raise a shield up and back away from you.
Matchup > Distance > Health. Depending on your titan, close in the distance if you believe that the enemy's health puts them at a disadvantage.
Tone can beat ronin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5rWIuZ1MIE
Sorry, i must have missed your answer/question.
Tone has comparable mobility to Ronin, which means if you keep track of its movements and use your dash to counter his, you can keep him at bay. Especially if he uses phase to try to close to you. If you can keep distance to him so that his Phase will be used to get him into close range, then you can simply dash in his direction the second you see him phase. That means he will phase right past you and while he needs to reorient himself, you already know where he will be.
This leaves you time to turn around, and hit him a few more times, building the missiles. His dash isn't going to be sooner of cooldown than yours. You have 2500 more HP than the Ronin.. and if both of you are equally skilled, then you should win due to your health advantage (assuming he didn't get the jump on you). Also don't forget your electric smoke, which not only refreshs whenever you use your ultimate, but also can blind him, which gives you more time to get distance again.
And this might sound like irony, but if you struggle against Ronin then play Ronin for a while. You'll learn its limitations.
Tone is good for new people, but experienced players usually play as other titans
Ronin and Tone stand out most, even if used by newer players.
And PvE becomes rather boring if you get multiple players who use those Titans.
I always like to have my Titan on auto most of the time, while I try to salvage batteries for my team. But that's near impossible to do with those Titans in your team. Especially with Ronins.
