No.
The community: You have a bunch of dedicated players who's been playing this game since its inception, so if the game population ever dips again, matches will still be there, though queue times will get slow. The huge spike from the steam release really gave it a boost, so this is the best time for you to try this game out.
In-game purchases: You can buy decals, banners, skins and prime titans with real life currency. Prime titans don't give you any tactical advantages, but they do give you a different, more angular model, new sound effects and a cool execution. Closest you get to "pay to win" is getting the ultimate edition, which just skips all the weapon unlock progression.
Extra note: If you and your friends (except the last one) do end up getting the game, you'll always have enough players for a game of frontier defense. It's personally my favourite mode so that would be a blessing if I were you.
Otherwise, all matches are 5v5 so you'd all be able to fill in an entire team just with eachother.
Conclusion: Maybe I'm a biased old dog, but I implore you to try this game out and give it the chance it never got. I'm sure you and your friends will love it once you all get your hands on this game. Just remember that your loss rate may seem embarrassing for your first hours, dedicated playerbase and all that.
Edit: misspellings.
