SOLVED: Windows 8.1 64 Bit Hotfix

Hey there.

I was wondering about a working "Unfinished Business" and my "Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack" is still hanging on the intro video. But now my Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack is working on Windows 8.1 64 Bit. I hope my workthrough is solving your problems too.

What to do:

1. Download Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack on Steam. There is also Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business included in the package.
2. Change directory to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\" (it could be an other path of installation for Steam) and open the folder "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Unfinished Business"
3. There you'll find the files "binkw32.dll" and "mss32.dll". You have to copy the files to installation directory of "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold" right into it. Please make an backup of the original files first by copy and paste them.
4. Go back to the "Unfinished Business" folder and open the "Data" directory. There you'll find the file "INTRO.SLF".
5. Now you have to do step 3 again. Don't use the main directory for pasting the "INTRO.SLF", change to the "Data" directory first.

After this few steps my "Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack" is working as it should.

NOTE: Do not "MOVE" the files, please "COPY" them.

Hi everyone !

I wanted to play JA2 again, so I tried to install it on my computer (Windows 8 ... unfortunately).

The solution by Karshten worked a bit : The game starts, it has a error message when I want to stop playing, like a lot of people here. But the problem here is that the game runs very slow.

So I tried to install patch 1.13 (and I want to play with it actually), but I have a problem with the ini editor which doesn't work. It says that it misses a part of the file "profiles" or something. I think the patch didn't install well, but I don't know what to do because I followed the steps like the tutorial says it http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218345/Installation).

What can I do ? Thanks for your help.

binkw32.dll is only in the Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Unfinished Business folder, missing it in the Jagged Alliance 2 Gold is one of the reasons why it doesn't work. Get sure you didn't clicked it wrong there.

Worked for Win 8.1 64 bit, did exactly as the original post instructed. Two of the four files were "Replace" actions as a same-named file existed for them (perhaps a half-hearted fix was attempted?). The game did not work until I did as the original post suggested. FYI, I am playing unmodded, vanilla/out of the box. I am disappointed that Steam hasn't pressed the new publisher/mod team to fix this permanently in a more appropriate way - this game deserves it.

Now for the other problem - the game does crash upon exiting, does not shut down correctly so a Windows pop-up ensues trying to shut it down properly, and in the end I have to shut down the pop-up and Steam. Is there any additional fix so that the game will close normally and go back to the Steam page once done with JA2?

The game sometimes crashes in Win 8.1 when there are big fights with lots of NPCs on sector. Is there any change coming that will permanently fix this game for Win 8.1, rather than just a bunch of hotfixes and 3rd party referral sites? I would like to see Steam step up a bit and challenge the publisher to get this to work for Win 8.1 with no external help/mods, so we can all enjoy this game rather than speculate on how to make it work.

Thanks for the fix. The upgraded game is running flawlessly in win 8.1.
