How is a person biased by asking a question they want to know the answer to? I think it seems biased to tell someone to not ask questions about a subject.
IF somoene gave 1.13 a complete retexture, better character models, unique ones at that etc how great would it be??? it would ADD SO MUCH to it if not COMPLETE 1.13.
I love it how u can call mortars in from sectors with ur militia and build fortifications now :D
You're right that's not biased. I'm biased though, and I can set a few records straight...
One of the founding principles of the mod was to avoid forcing anything on anyone and to allow for as close to a complete vanilla game as possible. Even early on, we all realized that JA2 fans were passionate about it and everyone wanted their own features in the game. When you throw together an international development team of hardcore fans feature creep is to be expected.
And yes, if you've seen the original source code, you would know that you absolutely HAVE to be a hardcore fan to even want to look at it, much less turn it into what it is today.
It can be complicated to setup and configure, and definitely not recommended for the faint of heart or the brand new player, it can absolutely turn you off of JA2 if you don't have a basis of experience. But it has helped keep this game alive for almost 2 decades.
SirTech was an amazing development studio that didn't get half the recognition they deserved. They created living, breathing virtual worlds unlike any other development studio of their era and we can thank them for the foundation that the Skyrims of today are built upon.
So yeah, 1.13 is probably not for everyone but for the most part, it did stay true it's original intent. The biggest problem I had with its development was the moving target it provided for modders and the lack of a feature-lock option for them so they could balance around the core mod and lock feature settings in place that couldn't be changed in their mod.
It also posed the same problem (moving target) for developers like myself who just didn't have the time to keep up with everyone elses code. So code-wide changes like feature locks became very complicated messes to try and make happen.
I got the features I wanted in, so in the end, who am I to say slow down on getting your features in?
JA2 was a very finely balanced game, and I'm not sure the 1.13 have any real understanding of what it takes to make that so.
It's ironic, the reason they are fans is because of that well tuned balance. Now they've made this mod which really has lost all sight of what it was trying to achieve.
Anything and everything has been thrown in there, and it has completely stuffed the game.
There's a saying - 'less is more', and it's not unusual for community driven projects to degenerate like this.
Stracciatella is very good. Just updates the game with high res, nice and stable.
It's a shame as some minor tweaking to AI etc could really improve the game, but it requires restraint from people retouching the original.
Hiding everything behind a billion different ini options is no substitute. Again, the only people familiar with what needs turning off and on, are those people heavily invested in it emotionally who follow the development very closely and won't stand for any criticism of it.
Which is how it's lost sight of what it was originally trying to achieve, but anyway.
I really was a bit shocked to come back all these years later as someone who played a lot of JA2, and see this mod ridden with some of the most absurd feature creep I've seen in a long time.
Hopefully someone takes control of the project and refocuses it, but this is very unlikely in what is now a very, very old game.
Remember all the waiting and anticipation for JA3? Who would've thought.
But I like it and the way it is made into something bigger, better... Ultimately more realistic, because real life doesn't automatically equate to 'balance' or fairness in the field.
You should try it out, try the vanilla game first. Personally, I was just blown away by the 1.13 mod which made me postpone my playthrough of the vanilla in favor of the mod.
I'd advise you to install AIMNAS (big-maps, awesome) over that installation to have a fuller game and one where you can choose which mod to play.
I also downloaded many other mods like 'Arulco Vacations, Arulco Reloaded, Arulco Vacations, Vengeance Reloaded...
Bascially a lot of mods :D I really like them and I adore the game, it's really awesome. I had to adapt to it because I couldn't get into it at first, because I didn't know what to do precisely but later, after a while I figure it out and grew into it and into these mods.
There's this Polish website that has a lot of mods to download which are mostly kept up to date, you should check it out.
