"Don't play the fan made patch" (patch 1.13)
I haven't even progressed far into this game, so when I get an Android tablet I'll have good cause to re-engage it - but I'm unsure if the 1.13 patch will be compatible. Having fielded that question to a someone, I was told this:

Don't play the fan made patch
It's unstable and unbalanced and buggy
The vanilla game was perfectly timed
The fan base patch is garbage by comparison
Lost track of what made the game so repayable and fun
It's not a Bethesda game. The debs knew what they were doing. There is no need for mods

I'm interested to hear what others' opinions of those statements are.

Eh, the fan mod is very hit and miss. For every good idea they had, they added an equally stupid one too.

This is exactly why I prefer Stracciatella mod. It only enhances what's already there and adds quality of life features. It still feels like you're playing the same game. Just at higher resolution, with less bugs. ...and for what it's worth, they are still updating it.

Personally my biggest complaint with the 1.13 mod is they don't model barrel climb accurately at all. Like, when you're firing a machinegun in full auto, you're not just going to let the gun rise uncontrollably to the point where it's literally impossible to hit your target because all of your bullets are flying a mile above your target's head, your natural response is going to be to pull it down back on target. Considering these are professional soldiers who literally do this for a living, controlling an automatic firearm firing in full auto should be something they have a lot of experience with. Having absolutely no control over your gun is the sort of thing you'd only see from someone who's literally never even so much as held a gun before, not a seasoned combat veteran.

In trying to make the game more realistic, they ironically made it less so. Like, the way burst fire works in vanilla ja2 is far more realistic. Like, it's clearly made by someone who plays way too many videogames and has no idea how actual guns work.

tl;dr: The mod was clearly made by people who don't actually understand why videogames work they way they do and why they never strive for 100% realism.

Hi, after reading quite a lot here... I still have a question. With v1.13 updated "hi-res" graphics and also sounds, is it possible to go back to v1.12 vanilla gameplay behaviour and logic? Switching INIs in INI Editor still had the v1.13 IMP and char selection.

Last time I tried it was basically impossible, or at least so difficult to do that it wasn't worth the time. 1.13 is a fun mod to toy around with if you've exhausted JA2, but it is absolutely not vanilla JA2.

Personally I think it's misleading to call it 1.13 because it implies that it is the latest version of JA2, when it is actually a totally different, heavily modded game. Like Ryan above said, try Stracciatella for a proper vanilla experience.

The 1.13 patch is, in my opinion, amazing and mandatory to having a better experience with JA2. However it is worth noting that you are going to have to mess around with the INI editor A LOT in order to get things working. There are many optional features, many of which don't work well depending on your copy of the patch.

For instance there's a bug that will sometimes happen if you are fighting in areas with a lot of militia; the engine kinda panics because there normally aren't that many characters in a battle, so you have to press E otherwise when you go to sector it will crash. Hell sometimes features just stop working, all of the sudden I can't order enemies to surrender, so it's going to be sort of an uphill battle learning how to fix the problems you encounter.

What does work is: A ton of new weapons, characters, AI fixes, a load bearing gear mechanic that allows you to use customizeable tac vests, and resolution fixes. Both recruiting agencies have double the guys now as well.

1.13 isn`t a fan patch or something it´s a base for mods, so the base version is not balance or somthing use submods like arulco folding stock or something similar.

1.13 is a dumpster fire that hasn't had in official release in nearly ten years.

Stracciatella is the way to go.

You just have to know where to look. pbworks isn´t updated anymore, sure. But that doesn´t mean it´s not updated at all. The latest Release can be found on Github: https://github.com/1dot13/source/releases
