I recommend first attempting scenarii in conjunction with base level adversaries so that you still get an escalation effect, I think playing without escalation past the introductory game messes too much with the pace of invader phase II.
The quick play option is also a great way to push yourself to get out of your comfort zone while keeping a relatively balanced challenge for your level of mastery, Maybe try a few quick plays in beginner mode and set it as moderate if you win too easily. I do wish there was more options and granularity for that feature, like a fully fledged randomizer, but it does a pretty good job for now.
