Can I start from this game if I haven't played yakuza before?

I want to start with a more modern game and if I like to try past games in the series, does this game require that I know some kind of story before starting it?

You can start with this game for sure. Its a new protagonist which shows his story, although the protagonist from yakuza 0-6 does appear and it does slightly spoil the end of 6, but if you arent too bothered about that then this is something you can start with, when you want to play the others start with 0 and work your way up

All those other games in the series are action RPGs. This is a turn-based JRPG.

The Yakuza Kiryu series (0-6) really deserves to be played in order, but this one is mostly outside of that narrative.
