Selling any other shop gets you like 1% less than you have spent upgrading it, so it's not hard to sell old stuff to get new ones.
Just periodically sell your lowest performing business that isn't ichiban confections to buy something farther down the list that brings in more money.
You only ever get five slots for businesses you can buy/sell, so there's no reason to keep early ones.
But at the very least, I have one of every kind of business. I do have some of the DLC employees but to be honest, except for maybe one of them, they've all been a major disappointment during the shareholder meetings. I have primarily focused on training up the Roomba, the former baseball athlete, the lady who owned the questionable restaurant we bunked in, and the leader of the Geomijul (probably not spelling that right). Those four have slapped down more shareholders together without me having to employ begging/apologizing.
And even though you can't sell Ichiban Confections, at least you can upgrade it to stay relevant.
(Also ended up running Ichiban Confections with Nugget as the manager, supported by the street cleaning robot and the old lady.)
My shareholder meetings was also Goro, the old woman you start with, Geomijul woman, and Nick. I raised them to max rank and trained them to cap, and at this point I just mash buttons to breeze through the meetings.
Basically - it seems like you need to make almost 1 billion per quarter or whatever in order to conclude this mini-game/side-story.
In the end, it was Majima breaking people's shields and the leader of the Geomijul who won it for me. Their low move requirement meant I could just spam them and win every time.
Overall, I'd have to say this is my least favorite minigame in Y:LAD. I'm really hoping it's not in LAD:IW. Once I understood it, things were fairly simple, but it was not an enjoyable aspect of the game in the least. If not for needing the money for the Romance workshop, I wouldn't even have bothered. That's how frustrated I was at the beginning. But, the experience was definitely something else. I just wish it was better explained in-game.
Just pick up commercials and hit auto care after every second business period.
Just proceed with the game, do side quests and you will find employees able to help you progress with the business. This content is made to you succeed.
