Should I buy this or Yakuza 0?
I've never played a Yakuza game. Should I buy this or Yakuza 0? Both look good. It should be mentioned that I play with mouse and keyboard. Which has the better M&KB-controls?

I can't speak for controls as I used an Xbox controller, but the games are really different in terms of combat. I would say get both if you can.

Thank you for your swift reply. Would you care to elaborate on the differences in combat?

Well everything up to 6 is 3d brawler combat. Can’t say for m+k controls but some claim they are fine. 7 and 8 are turn based RPGs so mouse and keyboard should be fine with it.
Like a Dragon is turn based so its slightly better for M&KB but you got to be snappy with certain moves like guard. Sometimes I get confused between space and E. But I usually play this with a game pad and very rarely keyboard when Im on the laptop in bed

From a story and plot perspective, while the plotlines aren't exactly directly tied to one another, there are a lot of references to characters, events, and places in the prior games. A few of the summons in 7 are callbacks to earlier characters, some of the plot points allude to the events of earlier games (and while not absolutely necessary to understand the plot as a whole, it might give you greater appreciation for certain bits of dialogue or story points knowing the details of the other plotlines in the series), and some of the late game appearances really won't be as meaningful without having the background of the prior games (there's a few big players from the earlier games that make a surprise appearance and play some role in the story).

Personally I'd recommend starting with 0 and working your way through the series. They're (mostly) all worth playing and you really get to appreciate the building overarching lore of the series as you go, seeing how events that happened 5 or 6 games ago affect the plot of the later games. You don't NEED to play the others to understand 7's plot, and on the surface it's pretty straightforward, but a having the knowledge of the previous games stories lets you appreciate some of the more nuanced plot points and add just that much more depth.

Thank you guys. I bought Yakuza 0, it seemed like the best place to start.

Yakuza 7 feels very much like a spinoff game to me, and while it's enjoyable and the story stands on it's own, I think either 0 or Kiwami 1 are absolutely the best starting points for newcomers.

I had to refund Y0 because of two reasons:

1. The mouse control was abysmal. Walking around, and trying to look to the side with the camera felt sticky and horrible. Clearly made for consoles, this.
2. The amount of frequent and lengthy cutscenes in the three first hours. This isn't a game, it's a movie.

1st. Some mentioned you should use a controller as the m+k aren’t great from 0-6
2nd. The entire series is like that even like a dragon. But it opens up as you progress, curious what got you interested to try either game or the series without knowing this?

1. I gave it a shot. A game released on PC should support proper M+KB control. But now I know for myself.
2. I can stomach some cutscenes, like in The Witcher 3 or Dying Light. But this was too much, even for me. I felt interrupted every other minute, and was forced to watch clips that were over ten minutes long each time. It's a matter of taste, I suppose, but when I want to play a game, I want to PLAY more than WATCH.

1.While I can agree, the game even stats its better played with a controller being on PC you have various control options. Given the kind of game yakuza is M+K would never be ideal in geneeral.

2.To repeat all the Yakuza games are like this at the start, in order to establish characters, setting, some tutorials etc. I'm going to assume you never reached the first long battle. Yakuza 0 has tons of things on offer even side stuff that'll have a small story attached with talking. If you can't handle that I guess find another game series, since the game isn't all about constant brawling. Unless you expected something else out of the series.
