It can be a bit misleading though with elemental attacks since EX weapons give large buffs to a classes primary element if it has one.
So if, for example you use Orbital Strike (a magic based attack) with a rank 99 chef it will do around the same damage as an enforcer at rank 50 with a fully leveled spec ops riot shield despite the chef having a much higher magic stat.
Yeah the wiki's are pretty bad.
I mostly learned by watching a few Japanese youtubers with auto-translate back when it first came out and then playing the game for an embarrassing amount of time lol. At around 500 hours there's still stuff that I don't know for certain about the mechanics since there's a surprising amount going on under the hood.
For character planning I don't have anything specific if you just plan on doing the base game. As long as you have a couple of heavy damage dealers and someone with decent agility to heal/debuff then even the boss fights are fairly forgiving.
I'd mention though to be careful on your first run through if you also plan on doing legend mode and the "True Final Millennium Tower" afterwards. That's where things get a bit complicated.
On ng+ legend even regular mobs can easily party wipe you on a single turn so you really need to have at least two characters capable of dealing really heavy damage vs each one of the 6 weaknesses. You basically do this by transferring character skills (the red dot ones) and building custom classes so it's best to plan for this early on in your first run before you get to ng+.
You'll also either need an idol with the Magical Concert skill unlocked or a character with high agility and a stack of lunches from Survive's bartender. An idol in the group will lower your party's dps output no matter how you build them but it's the better option imo since you can't always get to a supply box before running out of lunches.
