Is Yakuza8's development period the longest ever?
2005:Yakuza1
2006:Yakuza2
2009:Yakuza3
2010:Yakuza4
2012:Yakuza5
2015:Yakuza0
2016:Yakuza6
  Yakuzakiwami
2017:Yakuza kiwami 2
2020:Yakuza7

Considering the speed of development in the past, the tendency has been to release the next game one to three years after the previous one. Since Yakuza7 will be released in January 2020, it is likely to be released around January 2023, based on past trends. However, it is unlikely that it will be released six months later. This means that Yakuza8 is likely to be the longest development work to date.

I think it is a good trend to have some longer development time.

with most (good) triple A games i think we'll start seeing longer release times like this. The games have gotten massive are are requiring more of every resource (including time). That being said I would guess that kiwami 1/2 were being worked on at the same time as 6 and 7 (just based off how game dev cycles work, you are able to rotate teams on and off things without losing time on either games dev time). So for a real gauge you should be looking at the gap between 6 and 7 for the next mainline game timeframe since that is a more realistic representation of the timeframe it takes to make 1 game.

I would guess like 2024 at the earliest and maybe later if they start doing more smaller projects alongside with the groups of the dev team that can't work on the game at certain times (the extra cashflow gained from doing it would let them take longer on their next game and put more into it)
Also hasn't sega gone through some shake ups that could have delayed development. I know Toshihiro Nagoshi left along with some other people so it might not be full dev time but enough so they can find footing on how they're going to proceed.

Also this isn't necessarily a good thing . Konami waited for Hideo Kojima to make his next MGS game and in the meantime, Konami started doing free to play / micro transaction games and realized it was more lucrative to do that instead of waiting 5 years to put out one game.
Soon we will find out on 14th Sep which is 1 day later. Isn't the studio gonna streaming the news of it? It's coming

Yakuza8 is said to be the biggest Yakuza game ever. I expect that the reason for the extended development period is due to the increased amount of content. We expect it to be a great work.

If you exclude Lost Judgement, Gaiden, and Ishin Kiwami then it is, yes.

we got the like a dragon ishin game in february, but regardless, im pretty sure each upcoming game has its separate teams, they are also making the judgement series... i think Y7 and Y8 are taking longer because they are not like any other yakuza game in terms of gameplay

I'd say Judgement 3 is pretty unlikely to hit before 8, just because they didn't mention it at all when they announced Ishin Kiwami, Gaiden, and 8, and because of how LJ is only a year old right now. A fairly standard release schedule for games on this sort of scale right now is around 3-4 years, so I wouldn't expect to see another judgement entry reveal until late 2023 at the soonest, when 8 will be near to a release date if the estimate of early-mid 2024 is to be believed for 8.
