The timing is different for each attack, with multi-hit attacks requiring multiple inputs.
They only way to get decent at it is to keep trying.

The circle doesn't actually go inside (at least not visibly). It's just how I perceive it in terms of timing.
You press the button when it stops moving, which is when it reaches the edge of the yellow circle, yes. If you press it before it stops, you're too early. Be confident and wait for it to finish moving. It's very generous.
