Perfect Attack Timing for Adachi's Beatdown?

I just got Adachi as a party member, and his first attack skill is Beatdown, the first "timed attack" I have access to (whereas Ichi's punch is a rapid press). I can't for the life of me tell what the timing is supposed to be, or whether I'm doing it right. I see the ring that closes in on the Triangle button. Do I have to press the button right as it hits the ring? Once it's inside it? Before it hits the ring? Is there a visual difference to tell me if I did it right?

when you hit the ring. It will say +dmg if you do it right.

yeah idk why the outer circle exists. its a complete misdirection.
