The bonus of releasing your own stuff, is that you keep all profits AND you can still include the same songs in a contracted album. I usually record singles during a contract, and if I don't use them on the contract album I release them immediately after i fulfill the contract and before I sign a new contract.
I then have a year to come up with new material while having the self released songs as a fall-back if I need them.
Early in the game, it is a good idea to go back to the place you played the night before because they will be more inclined to book you again,,,unless you did something to damage your relationship with the venue.
As soon as you sign with a manager, you can assign him the job of finding gigs for you, but you can still book a smaller venue without his input (and without paying him a fee).
Only a manager can book you into a theater or arena venue.
As an addition to this, if you skip a booked gig at a club you will get negative reputation somewhere around -17 if I recall. A small venue will not book you directly with a negative reputation. I have found you can regain your reputation at said venues by attending shows there. However, a manager can still book you into those clubs, which also helps you to regain your reputation. That being said, when you have advanced to where you have a manager booking you gigs you likely don't care so much about your reputation at a single club venue, other than it also effects your overall reputation in a city to some degree.
