My advice is to choose neither as a main skill. Stage Presence is my fave. My reasoning is based on happiness and ego. If your character does not write music or lyrics, the other band members will be sharing the credit for songs and every time you play a song they helped write, they get happier and ego issues become less relevant. Conversely, your popularity and income from gigs and sales will be boosted by high stage presence.
At beginner level you will get 300 experience points by level 50, 250 at medium, and 200 at hard.
I choose Stage Presence as my main skill and focus my experience points into mixing in Playing skill and Production. Since you get the first 20 Playing skill points from busking (unless you screw it up) you will need about 55 experience points to max playing skill (you will gain added points from gear and the occasional point from practicing). Another 40-45 points will easily get you 100 stage presence by level 50 (with gear). If you train up Repair for free and put the majority of the rest into Production, you can have a main character with 100 skill in Stage Presence, Playing, Production and Repair along with a few extraneous points scattered between Business and Writing.
This also means that at Easy level you could have 70/70 Music and Lyrics if you like or 50/50 at Medium.
I don't see any mistakes.. you max out your main skill, and your others should be 50% of your main., ie 50 in 3 or more other stats (not including equipment)
I think my lyrics aptitude hired band member basically had the most points you can basically max out playing, stage presence, writing music and writing lyrics. They just aren't all maxed out at the same time since you rotate equipment.
Most of my band members had a full set of equipment for playing, song writing, and stage. So you might have +20-+30 equipment rotated active that gives to song writing but when its time to play it'll drop down to have playing pumped up.
So the only category of the 4 you need to fully max is lyrics everything else will have a big help from equipment. Plus the free +20 from busking when you start out.
I probably would stop adding points to everything except lyrics at the 70 point. Then you want to get all the different sets of best equipment and see how it makes each attribute when performing the different mechanics.
Then finish pumping up each category to makeup the difference to 100. Depending on instrument you will only need 70-80 points to get to 100 in songwriting, playing and stage presence.
Each instrument will be able to get a different max amount of points from equipment for the attributes. Some you might need 80 points to get to 100 and others you might need say 73.
And + Stage presence for gigs
I've always prioritized + playing for gigs thinking they would play better. D'oh...
playing for practice and play higher song difficulty
writing music for song writing
stage presence for gigs
so you basically want 3 sets of gear for each mechanic and the game just auto equips the best gear for the situation. some high end gear you might only need 2 sets for a person/instrument if it give you two +9/+10
that way even someone has say like 10 writing music points with gear it might be 30-40 range. its enough to help out even end game
"Not Necessarily" is the point I tried to emphasize. There are no blueprints that have to be followed in this game. Even when Todd introduced the last major patch emphasizing Production skill, I never felt the need to re-tool my band, or trash it and start over.
I have been frustrated countless times by games that can not be won unless you do 'X' before 'Y'. I hate games that are supposedly random but are in reality linear. The encouragement and emphasis on improvisation and going your own way are why I love this game.
Success in Rising Star 2 is defined by the player, and anyone can reach their own level of success without following a pre-defined path.
You can play the game as a solo artist, or design your band in almost any configuration (stage limitations notwithstanding) and still attain success.
There is no 'Holy Grail' in RS2, and it is ALL about the JOURNEY, rather than the GOAL.
It's been a great ride for me, and I can't wait to see what new twists Todd mixes in.

I even shop around for 3 sets of guitar strings for each category. Stage Presence is getting buffed by a whopping 33 points!
My goal is to max out Lyrics since it cant be buffed. I got a free 19 points for Playing by Busking. I'll put just enough points into Writing Music to let equipment get me to 100. Its getting buffed 31 points right now and I know i dont have the top equipment just yet.
Then its Playing, Stage Presence, and Production. I found going solo I need a little production to write songs. And I cant really afford a producer to combine ideas especially if those ideas dont turn out to be anything good.
I might shoot for 70-75 Stage Presence with equipment so probably around 35-40 points spent. I will aim to bring Playing up to 50 spent so around 80 with equipment and 20 of it was free. Then I guess the rest into production. Should give me around 50 points for production. Which I think will be enough until you are making serious money.
Figured 250 points plus the 20 from busking and 2x for aptitude.
