Downloaded youtube 8k video format on PC VR
Ok, so recently I downloaded some 8k VR videos from youtube and they don't play well at all. Herespehere shows the video format as some kind of long string of numbers followed by (10VA),,, I think. So I am wondering, is this a normal format? Is it supposed to work in heresphere? (It does not play well in Deovr either) Do I need to download some codecs? Or is my computer too old? Is this a known issue?

Do such videos work for anyone else who is also using PCVR? I tried a bunch of them and it seems to be the same whether it's VR180 or 360. Previously, when I downloaded videos using yt-dlp they did not download in 8k format even when it was available but defaulted to 4k which uses a different codec. (h264 I believe) Actually being able to download the 8k versions now seems like a step up, but now it is just a matter of being able to play them.

I haven't seen that type of video format before. You could try downloading LAV filters (or the Klite codec pack, just make sure not to install the third party adware), and then switch to DirectShow player backend in the HereSphere user settings. That usually has better codec support.

You can also stream directly from yt-dlp links in HereSphere. Place the latest yt-dlp executable into this directory: %localappdata%/HereSphere/Saved, then when you're on the youtube video page, press the icon that looks like a play button on top of 4 tiles (to the left of the url input box).

I see. I did check the file properties via windows file explorer, but it did not say the same thing. It did mention AV1, so perhaps it's just a version of that, or maybe something about the files makes it difficult for heresphere to recognize it. I have installed Klite codecs before, I'm unsure about LAV. Switching to direct show did not help either.

I'll try streaming it.

I was kind of hoping it's just a new video format that's not yet supported but is about to be.

AV1 is probably only supported on Nvidia RTX 4000 series or newer graphics cards.

I really dont know anything about these kinds of things. But apparently it was developed for android so, I guess because I had to use the android user agent, that's why I got that version. I think some of the files use VP9. Also made for android, as far as I know. Those videos did not work either, maybe because of the resolution.

So, that leaves me with the question. Can one perhaps convert the videos to HEVC? I've never done that sort of thing before. But HEVC seems to work with 8k every time.

You could try using ffmpeg to convert av1 to hevc, though I'm not sure if it will work unless you have a working av1 decoder. It will probably take quite a long time for the conversion to complete, though.
Maybe I'm getting in over my head with this. I have not tried streaming via heresphere yet so that avenue should take priority.
