- 2024 UPDATE ART.
It's your game of course, but if you're going to respond why not address the actual issue? Do you just like big tiddy AI art? So do plenty of other people, but at least lay your cards on the table.
Massive disappointment at the mindless shoving of A.I. into such a lovely looking game. Is it such a hard thing to respect your fellow artists?
And the kicker is that the original art is already so playful and interesting, why even do this?
I don't get it...
cause theres no telling where the AI use ends, in something people are paying money for. and the dev avoids acknowledging that he had it generated rather than made himself. plus there are no credits for the game at all, even when it comes down to covers of known music. also he did throw the AI art into the game itself.
When I first discovered the game, I thought it looked fantastic and picked-up Pilots as a show of support. To openly support the use of imagery like this, though, genuinely depresses me. It seemed like there'd been such a great effort in the development of this game that it's surprising to see the work of other creatives so devalued. If you're reading this, Dr Kucho, it does seem like you developed a genuinely special game, and I hope that you reconsider the use of "AI-generated art".
Obviously he thinks that putting a girl with big jugs on the storefront will result in increased sales, and he's probably right. All you nerds sitting there judging him for trying to make money have never tried to run a small business before
For the first point, both Moons of Darsalon and Pilots of Darsalon already had banner/cover images that were replaced with these new images. Spending time generating, selecting, editing and implementing new visuals to replace old ones would technically take more budget, due to time investment, even if not very much.
For the second point, part of the problem is that people are describing something generated by algorithmically plagiarising the work of others as better than the potential work of an actual person using actual creativity, likely because it looks either more detailed, realistic, or close to the work of an existing artist with a popular style. If you don't see an issue with attributing quality to copying the work of others (even with the multiple signs of weirdness that result from a machine not knowing what it's doing), then I don't know what to say. With that said, it should be obvious to any critical human being that working with a robot instead of a human (with actual creativity), especially to sidestep paying people, is a bad move morally and creatively.
Also, the different art styles in the game don't really fit together.
When you compare it to the original artwork (it's drawn, no pixels), they make sense everywhere - how is holding a gun, their clothes, and the fact that it's set in space (even the base, enemies and stuff).
It gives a bit of a soul of an artwork & it's already in the game.
But the AI images doesn't get that right.
It has an Earth snow mountain in background that isn't even in the game, realistic humans (spacesuit - how they even breathe?), and few details (enviorments, filter) that doesn't quite fit together.
The game graphics style itself is pretty simple (mixed gradient color).
It reminds of: Worms, Earthworm Jim, Oddworld: Abe's Exodus.
It's quite charming.
Let's compare to the game: Pilots Of Darsalon
Dev talked about updating the graphics (changing old backgrounds) for newer, more "stylish" ones. They even admitted that the previous ones weren't so great.
I say it looks good, when they done right.
Development is normal especially improved graphics, gameplay, fixes.
It's a lot of work, but these changes need to make sense in the game.
Right now, the header "art" might give people the wrong idea unless they plan to add "big updates" to the game.
They should consider that AI/tools doesn't fix everything, humans do, if they willing to do so.
