Story character weapons (no spoilers please)
i'm planning on playing this game once i'm finished with disgaea 2, and i'd like to know, without names/spoilers, what weapon types storyline characters in the party are gonna be using. I prefer to use the unique story characters over the generics, and i like having weapon variety in my teams, so i just want to avoid raising, say, a generic gun user if a story character thats good with guns joins the team at some point.

Weapon mastery works a differently in D4. And by that I mean it doesn't exist.
Instead of leveling up weapon mastery to unlock attacks, classes just learn attacks for weapons based on class rank. For story characters, abilities are level-gated instead of class/rank, since uniques can't change class.
That said, the unique characters have a "preferred" weapon and a second "less preferred but usable" one. DLC is another story, since you can cover all the weapon types with plenty left over, and I don't use the DLC characters.

Here's the main story characters in no particular order (outside of you start with the first 2).

Char1: Sword > Spear Physical fighter with good all-around stats
Char2: Fist > Axe Physical fighter with high STR/HIT/SPD
Char3: Axe > Sword Physical fighter with high STR. Unique ability makes tanky without having so many tank stats.
Char4: Guns > Staves Ranged support type. Gets some basic healing spells and I think HIT Up.
Char5: Staves > Bows Stats as caster. Gets first few tiers of 3 main elements.
Char6: Monster Has pretty high offensive stats, but glassy despite character's sprite looking kinda beefy.

I'd recommend for all of them to stick to their #1 weapon, except maybe Char#1, who works pretty well with a spear if you want a different sword user.

That said, with how weapon skills work in this one, you could just have someone as axe user, and then swap them to spears when you get the axe using unique. For example, the regular male warrior class specializes in axes, but sub-specializes in swords.
