Yep) It's even more interesting, because you don't know plot. Tho i watched some series just to understand, what type of anime it is. You can do this too.

The game starts mid way through the anime/manga and cuts out a lot of content, you'd have a better experience if you watched it first, otherwise many of the references will leave you confused.

You can still enjoy the game while not being familiar with manga and anime, but you will not understand some things and references they make in dialogue, so I would suggest watching anime or reading manga first.

Are there at least similar games with German text that are just as good or better.

Actually, most of JRPGs has Japan voice + English sub.
