Freespace 2 comparison.
Even tho they are very different in tone and gameplay I think DS1 is he only game thats come close to being as full of spaceyness.

You haven't tried Freelancer, then.

Indeed, you should really try Freelancer, it's brilliant.

Elite II: Frontier still pisses on any of those games.

Freelancer was my favorite space sim experience since the old X-Wing/Tie Fighter games. Freelancer was not perfect, but still a great sim. I loved Tachyon: The Fringe as well, but it lacked some of the openness of Freelancer. Thinking about giving DS1 a try, though.

You should try X3. Nothing quite like being able to build an entirely self sufficient weapons manufacturing complex.

Freelancer is the best but thats 10 years old, Freespace in 2nd, and Darkstar is 3rd... after that I'd put the X series... while they are a lot more sim style games they very boring and long winded.

I don't think there is actually any legal way to currently buy a digital version. Amazon still has it available new in the jewelcase for $10 US.

Privateer 1 is still the king of these kind of games

Freelancer comes close, but nothing can compare to the good old privateer 1 cockpit sight. you just had the feeling that you are really in a vulnerable vessel in space. and it was slow enough, so that one can make tactical decisions.

same problem with X3: cockpits are gone. it feels like you are flying as superman in EGO-sight with a HUD. and the whole logistic system is too userunfriendly

the "physics-engine" of Frontier and First Encounters were too realistic to make much fun
