You can also exchange runes with the Mage shop.
Save before you complete a quest (get your reward), if you don't like the prize - you can reload and usually get another one (runes are the best prize, so keep reloading till you get a good rune).
LOL, I'm female, but you're welcome :)
I never experienced a lack of runes, no matter how often they were used. To save runes, save the game before exchange runes with the mage and give him only three, sometimes you're lucky and get what you want.
Runes crafted into weapons / armor don't increase the regeneration time as much as "read" runes (it really makes a difference!). But be aware that you only get back ONE item if you go to the blacksmith again. It will be the item you click on.
The best rewards for quest are set items. The nun in the chapel and the man who wants you to get him fresh meat (left lower corner in Silver Creek) are good candidates. But the easiest way to get unique / set items are dragons. Just save short before you defeat them, because the loot will change every time as well. Usually you need to reload 3-4 times max. before they drop the golden / green stuff. :)
The level of the "Enlightened Iron" depends on the game level, so if you get it again while playing silver, gold etc. there's more + on finding special items. (Best for mages, because it's not really the strongest weapon.)
Almost forgot: You can craft foreign runes and items into your stuff as well, as long as there are no requirements you dont't fulfill (e.g. min. axe lore 6 or something). So if you have a nice ring etc. your character cannot wear himself, take it to the blacksmith. Same goes for runes with an equal name (e.g. "hard hit" for dark elf and gladiator).
And please never waste any skill points to trading or riding. After 1-2 hours of playing you'll never have to care about money again, and you won't find the really cool stuff in a store.
Riding is pointless, because you're faster on your own feet.
Funny: there are horses everywhere in Ancaria without a horse shoe above their head. You can ride them to a horse merchant and sell them there, even if the horses stood right next to him :)
Sorry this post became so long, but I really love this game to death (although the humor got a bit lost in translation).
