For older games on modern operating systems (I run Win7 x64) I have found two things that can cause problems: The Steam overlay and recent PhysX versions (I have a 560Ti NVidia card). I was able to uninstall my version of PhysX and install 09.12.0613 (which solved problems for me), and you can turn the Steam overlay off per-game in the preferences.

In regards to this question. I have the cd version of this game qhich doesn't work on windows 7. Is it going to make a difference with the version through steam?

My "PhysX" comment was just a general comment about issues with (some) older games, and I don't think there is an issue with this Steam version of the game. The OPs comment about "Crashes on Win8..starts loading and then the system freezes *sadface*" was exactly my symptom (on Win8 too), and rolling back the PhysX driver did the trick. I left the rest of the nVidia software at 310.54 though.

I tried it with Phenom 1,Phenom 2 and now I5 3570K on Win7,works with every machine

i have the cd version too, it doesnt work on 64 unless older than vista so xp or older but once you hit vista 64 or newer it will install but wont play, although if you go through steam it will install on win7 i tried every possible way with the cd version with no luch but steam got it :)

For me work in windows 8. You have to check compatibility and authorization

This is only Steam version, i try GoG and it's ok.

Ok, after put on "32 Bit Color Depth" in "Config" file in game folder game is run. But it's unplayable, it's very lag, mouse cursor lags to.
