Character level 1 - 60: Access to Bronze
Character level 20 - 100: Access to Silver
Character level 60 - 140: Access to Gold
Character level 100 - 180: Access to Platinum

I'm not finding the game fun as it's too easy so don't plan to finish the game if I can't increase the difficulty now. Also wouldn't play this twice just for a difficulty increase, I would play the underworld (?) part after completing the game on gold (hopefully) and play that on platnium difficulty.
Do you think I could download someone else's save file were they are close to the end of the game. Just load and play until finished to unlock gold difficulty for my own character?
EDIT: There are a few side quests which you have to do when you start a new character.
1) The blacksmith.
2) The wizard.
In order to get access to the services of these two NPC's, you need to do the quests for them. At the moment, I can't recall if there are any other must-have side quests, but most of them can be ignored. Nor is it necessary to explore the entire map. You are free to do whatever you want.
