Blue icons show where you need to go on the map for side quests - first shown for the objective and later once you have done that where the reward is to be found. Green icons show which quests were successfully completed (ie. after you collect the reward). In your log (L) you can choose which side quest is 'actively' being tracked (by default it is the last quest you accepted). All that means is that the small arrow on the compass points to the currently 'active' side quest AND there is a small blue arrow on the edge of the local map showing the direction to go IF the quest is still too far away to be shown on the local map. You can still go to any blue icon and complete any side quest anytime even if it is not the one 'actively' being tracked.
The main quest shows as a large yellow icon. The compass has a large arrow that always points in the direction of the main quest. Additionally, if you are still too far away for the main quest location to be shown on the local map (tab), a yellow arrow on the local map shows which way to go. Once each main quest is complete, its icon changes to green, and a new yellow icon is shown somewhere else with a new main quest.
Failed quests are shown on the maps (M and tab) in red. Some quests are depended upon a timer or some NPC surviving, and if you screw it up there is no second chance. Pay attention to the quest conditions (you can reread the quest in your log anytime) so as to not fail.
