Are there any plans for an actual online multiplayer mode?

There will be no online multiplayer, yet this game has some local multiplayer, which means you can use the "Remote play together" on Steam (you can play with a friend online on any game as if he was right there on the couch with you. This method is excellent, yet it has some disadvantages and might be a "no" to you : first of all, you'll be able to play only with your friends. No random races with random people. Second, if only one person needs to own the game in order to use the "remote play together", you both need an excellent internet connection. Finally, this means the game will be playable on split screen only, even if played online).

So technically, there will never be online for this game. No "native" online anyway. Because technically again, there is some online available through Steam. Yet it might not be what you excepted.

There is some weekly challenges with online leaderboards, that's as far as this game is going.
