What am i missing about coop?

I was starting the game and played from the earliest moment on for 5 hours with a friend. Progress was all shared. We decided to make a 1 hour break for lunch and as i re opened the game and entered my friends game again all my progress was lost. Money reset, all received items and improvements gone.
What am i missing? How am i supposed to keep playing with my friend if my character is complete garbage like i just started the game and my friend has already a way stronger character?
Multiplayer makes no sense like this.

Agree. It something which must be fixed asap.
