Play now or wait for DLC?

I have this game installed and very high up in my "Next to play" pile. Now I've seen a DLC will release.
Will the DLC append options in the base game, so should I wait until the DLC is ready? Or is it "only" the additional story where all the new options come into play, so I'm ready to go now and dive straight into DLC once released?

I never thought of this. I was prepared to replay this game again before the DLC. I beat it on switch in 2022 and loved it so much I’m excited for the DLC.
