How the save system really works?

The game saves from time to time, and we also have the option to save manually. But when manually saving some events are not saved. For example, I just opened a chest and then manually saved it. When I load this save the chest is still closed. This kind of thing happens all the time.

After all, what does the game save and what does NOT save? The character's position in the area is not saved, for example.

yup something is screwy. I was retrying a tough fight and lost 3x Oil items when I loaded the autosave. Shouldnt have happened.
