You can only do this when you're close to a fire (open fire in a house, stove, campfire, etc.).
So, the fire is not only helpful to warm yourself at certain times.
Most of the times, if it is the first time you've approached a fireplace or stove, you'll first need to find some wood (logs) which are either right next to it, or... a bit far away (in another place) and a little hidden.
Once lit, it keeps on burning, and when you pass by it again, you can save the game once more by clicking (or hit "E") on the fire.
I played for about half an hour, anl left the game, when i started it a again, the game was not saved, and i should play the last half hour again. So i quit the game again. Thankfs for nothing, autosave.
