Your best bet is having fighters and a couple of cyclones to effectively damage them, but the main thing you will probably need is your main starting gun. You should at some point upgrade its bonus armor damage and try to double its damage (up to a hundred) in the forge. Also at some point you need to research and place a shield aegis and research the ability that will refresh it. With that you can effectively tank incoming attacks. Ah yes, I forgot, I do not reccomend building towers early on not because they are bad, but because you need to make your personal army first. They will act as a shield to your fragile Taur and will still do decent damage. But there is one tower you can build early on: the talos, a tower that defends agains rockets. Build them around the perimeter, 5 should suffice. This will allow you to significantly reduce enemy's damage output.
With all that you should be good and can build your defences how you see fit. The sentinels are indeed a bit underwelming, but are still useful. They just need enough investment and other units for cover, or they will be destroyed quickly. I believe them to be especially good on siege levels. I make use of every tower at my disposal except probably SAM sites, because I do not need them (fighters combined with other turrets are enough).
The game has its issues and the developer is pretty slow and doesn't like to talk to the community too much, but the game looks cool and has a pretty unique gameplay and interesting mechanics, so good luck on having fun.
