Someone please write a guide to first day survival...
1. I see the usual crafting / survival elements...baked bread, found water, etc.
2. Was attacked by a robot with a buzzsaw
3. My only weapon is a bat. Useless against this robot.
4. No chance of building adequate defenses on day 1 without a lot of help.

Anyone...?

In the initial spawn area loot everything including the door. At the gas station in the back room use that door to seal off the open entrance. Now you have a safe zone.

Look for the pylon/antenna things and loot the batteries from the little box.

Set up the autominer and furnace at the first iron pile and get to producing steel you're going to need it.

Get the water pump close to the gas station working (only needs a battery or two) so you'll have water.

Find the lighthouse as there's a tesla coil thing there. Loot it, bring it back to the gas station and plonk it down in front of the double doors. Now use your program tool to link it to the switch in the gas station and program the switch to turn it on and off. Any bots come nosing around turn it on but beware it will zap you too if you get in range.

Finally loot wheat and blueberries and make blueberry muffins on the stove in the gas station. They give you a food and water boost.

You can take down a bot with the bat. It takes a little to get the timing and distance right but just back up and hit it. About 10 hits to kill one iirc.

a bat is a reliable robot pacifier, it's really just a matter of timing and keeping the right distance. i dealt with a group of 8 robots once, and only got a scratch or two, but that motivated me to finally make a turret

Nice. Have either of you considered writing a guide...? ;)

Where do you get water? The dark patches it describes on the ground look like oil, and indeed tell me there's no water when I try to use the thing there.

They are not as dark as oil but darker than the usual sand. There is actually a water generator close to the gas station. Pop some batteries in that and it will start producing but water production is slow. Also you'll get to see the actual color of the water area.

Personally I set up at the gas station, put a second water generator next to the one already there, run a conveyor belt to a storage box and water stops being an issue.

How do you loot the door? All I can do is open it and close it.

@valenti_scott - Equip and use your 'Programming Tool'. Point your Programming Tool at the door you are trying to take/loot. Hold down a right-mouse-click (hold down right mouse button) until door is removed and added to your inventory. Hope this helps.

Or you could just hold right click without the 'Programming Tool' in your hand.

@cr122009cr - Excellent! I was not aware that you do it without the tool in hand. I will start using that technique from now on. Thanks again!

I got killed quickly the first 4 times I started new games. Then I found a way to survive in the beginning. Head for the gas station, gathering some resources (iron & wood) to make a camp fire and a steel bat, and some food (blueberries preferable, potatoes and wheat, too).

It's suicidal to try to beat a robot with a steel bat on level terrain. Jump on the garbage bins in the rear of the gas station whenever a robot threatens you. With practice, you can position yourself where the robot's saw blade arm can't reach you while you can hit the robot with the steel bat.

Also, staying on top of the garbage bins lets you safely build a camp fire to smelt ores into ingots w/o exposing you to robot attacks. And any robot you destroy will yield some items you can use (e.g. ingots, batteries, circuit boards)./

Then make quick runs to gather a few resources, food and water. Retreat to the top of the garbage bins whenever threatened by robots. Gradually, you will be able to stockpile resources, build components to fortify the gas station, and establish a safe haven from robot attacks while you plan your next move. :steamhappy:

The initial robot attacks too soon in my opinion. If i had not played a lot before i re-rolled my game i would have got killed like 5 minutes into the new game.

you take the secure door from the spawn room and place it as the back door. Pick up the wood boxes and block the front door but leaving a 1/4 box gap which is big enough for the pathing to see it as a valid direction to you but not large enough to walk past. You can swing at the robots through the crack without getting harmed.
