Xbox controller issue

Ok, new to Steam. Was pumped to play Vice city for old time sake, had some issues connecting my Xbox one controller to my Mini Mac at first, then I got it connected, seemed to work fine on big picture mode. When I started playing vice city the controls seemed messed up, the screen was nonstop spinning, and when I went to drive a vehicle, I had to press B to drive and it would give me the side view while driving. I literally tried everything I could for about a hour to fix it and found no solution. So unfortunately I got a refund even tho I really want to play this game. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate that

Edit: I haven't tried to play any other games on steam using a controller, this was my first one.
