Effects on top of crops like red x and black smoke

What do the particle effects and symbols above the crops mean? I've looked in the guidebook and I can't find anything that explains it. Does the red X mean the crops are dead? Or is that what the black smoke means? I don't get it.

Smoke means crops are dead, idk about red x. never seen it

Yeah, I had the red x above almost all my crops and I don't know what it means. But thank you for telling me about the smoke.

Red X's mean wrong Fertilizer. So if you have cats working on the farm in the spring, they will fertilize the plants and they are out of season. That is why you see the out of season fertilizer tab on animals that shouldnt work on the farm in the spring
