it doesn't matter what exactly the food items are for the purposes of hanging out- as long as you have enough to make a meal (food+ drink) you'll get the bonus affection.
As for Ice cream, that's a bit of a red herring as far as I can tell. It's not there to tell you to bring him ice cream to eat, but as a hint that one of the hangout activities you can do is MAKING ice cream with him.
As for how hanging out works- you've noticed the multiple options for hanging out right?
Different hangout options have bonuses for being performed in certain seasons/weather- for example, stocking with yonten gets a bonus if its raining. so for "optimal" affection, you need to bring a full meal (food+drink item) and pick an activity good for that days weather.
likewise (I'm not 100% certain on this) I think choosing a "bad activity" might result in wasting time without gaining any affection- after all, training outside while it's raining would be a pretty miserable experience. if anyone can confirm, please do- like I said, i'm not 100% certain.
TLDR: Bring food AND a drink to share a meal, try to pick activities that are good for the days weather.
hope this helped even alittle!
You need to craft drinks yourself. Gather or buy a variety of ingredients and experiment with cooking until you get some drink recipes (or look them up on the wiki).
There IS a food food vendor who sells both food and drinks... on the 7th floor of the dungeon which I think is a bit too far away imo. but whenever you pass through the dungeon, I recommend buying that shop out.
but yeah, the best source is just going to be making them yourself, not only because its more accessible, but because it'll probably just be better quality
