You only need 1 copy of game.
To play with friend.

Your friend just need to download free version at origin.
Add your friend's origin account.
Invite him to your game.

difference of free version is, the free version can only accept invite and can't host the game themself.

Obviously, given that the game is co-op only (no friendly bot A.I.), they figured that allowing people to play [online] with one copy of the game, was more likely to sell the game, than if they duped people into buying it -- subsequently them finding out that they literally needed two copies of the game to play [online] -- buyers complaining -- refunding -- dumping negative reviews -- thereby, killing the reception for an otherwise seemingly decent game.

Actually, it's about the only non-dіck move I've seem E.A. do since... like... well... ever! Also, given the game has split-screen functionality (rare for non "pixel art" / indie / meme tier titles), they've done pretty well to accommodate co-op play... Albeit, said functionality being of the doing of the developer, rather than publisher (and the game still lacks LAN, which is a minor negative).

Why would the game need LAN? It's splitscreen either way, even if you're playing with someone with the game/friend pass version, so I don't get what benefit it would offer vs just playing on the same screen.

Is Friend Pass a one time only thing? Or can you play with multiple friends who dont own the game?
