My own experience is that once you're out of the really weak phase--call it levels 1-5--you should be able to go toe-to-toe with anything at your level or even a level or two higher. At the moment I'm playing using a mod that reduces my XP by 80 percent, and I'm able to take on Tier 3 (level 12-15 monsters) rifts with a party that's at the 6-7 level.
But I've been playing a very long time and know a lot of the tricks.
OP is subjective and all about the play-style that you get the most out of. My vote is Cassandra verse mages and Blackwell for everything else but i actually prefer playing as a tactician and i actually find it the best over all. I'm sure many would say two handed or dual for it's single target burst damage but i'll explain what i mean if you want to read more.
Long version, the classes in the order i think is best. Character wise, Blackwell, Casandra, Sera, Vivian/dorian, Ironbull, Solas, cole(last or third, I still put him behind the two tanks), varric(he is last because i don't like his kit despite being a good tactician)
The character you make is the inquisitor. The class/race only has minor effects on the game with dialogue. You are locked into that character only when your at base/skyhold, to talk and run around there doing the base tasks, The story is told from that point of view obviously. Outside in the world where the game takes place you can use any of the 9 Class combos, 3 classes, and 3 specializations. So you can choose which ever class you want to play at any time during the game so you can really play all and can then decide what works best for you and what you find the best. (the main character is just a slightly better version of the NPC's as you can tweak them just a bit more and have slight bonuses over them. So i'll list them as they are built, the player can be a replica of them.
Shield warrior, (Blackwell/Casandra) Cassandra has Templar skills which are incredible when fighting mages, She just lays the smack down and her special skills can neutralize them rather easy. Blackwell on the other hand is the Best tank his specialty makes him nearly un-kill-able. You can basically forget about your party and kill dragons with him. He takes a long time but he can do it,
Tactician, (Sera/Varric) Many play as this style, which leans heavily into the ranged with bow/cross bow or a mage. In some ways this is OP, because you can sit back and watch the combat unfold while giving orders to your teammates Or jumping in at key points to boost the teammates power to get the best out of them.
Tactical mages, (Dorian/Vivian/Solas)
Mages are a weird group in this game, Solas is more of a buffer/debuffer and when combined with Casandra they become very powerful, but alone he isn't the best mage for me). The other two are AOE and single target. They can put out good damage and some of the skills can really help your party. To me they aren't the strongest, but they really power up with the whole tactician side of things, being able to direct your party which is really hard to do as a two handed or double dagger.
Two handed sword, Iron bull
It's a bit less damage than double dagger, but he also can take a bigger hit. He can smack down bosses as well and again you loose some of the tactician but it's a little easier as you can take some breaks and call out orders increasing the over all power of the party.
Double dagger (cole) This style can easily be called the most OP, but not for me i still find the the tanks better, as i think you just loose to much tactician. maybe some can solo a dragon with him, but i can't. I just jump into the dual dagger from time to time even if i make them. It's the strongest for single target damage. It has dodges, and movement that is very active, and killing bosses can often be a bit easier with this class as he hits very hard but he is so active you get less out of the party if all you do is play him. This style does make for a good main character though as the player buffs do make him even stronger, and then play as a tactician for the game and jump to them for key times. (i did this one play and it worked very well, so in that sense he can jump to first when played like that)
I dunno if this helped, but it's the way i see the game.
What he said. Completely agree with the assessments.
But since we're talking OP here, a couple of thoughts, which I'll put behind a spoiler wall:
For warriors: I tend to "de-specialize" them by redistributing their points to the "non-specialty" trees, Battlemaster and Vanguard.
Battlemaster includes one of THE most OP skills: Horn of Valor with Fortifying Blast upgrade. And it only takes five skill points to get it, so you can get it either when you reach Haven (typically at 3rd level) or at worst after your first rodeo in the Hinterlands. Cass starts out with three skill points and will earn one more during the prologue. If you're diligent and read through every scrap of lore (50XP each!), you'll be close to leveling again before you even leave Haven.
Battlemaster also includes a skill that everyone describes as OP, Combat Roll with Coming Through. I've tried this but I don't find it as useful as Charging Bull, described below in the Vanguard discussion.
Moving on to Vanguard, this has a very good early-game power, Charging Bull. I like this because it's a "threefer:" it allows you a pseudo-AoE (i.e. linear) attack; it gives you free Guard; and of course, it allows you to get away from tough spots, e.g. when you're being stun-locked by the screechy green demons
For rogues: the rogue specialty trees are too good to not use, but I often respec Varric early on to give him Poison Weapons with Leeching Poison from the Sabotage tree. This makes him much more survivable, especially in the early stages of the game. As an added bonus, it starts you toward one of the other OP skills in the game, Toxic Cloud with Lost In The Mist. This gives all party members in the AoE a "shield of invulnerability," with up to three persistent stacks.
The catch is, the shield is dissipated by ANY damage, be it as little as one HP. But it also shields you from those one-shot attacks that ordinarily would vaporize your party. And--bonus!--the passive skill Explosive Toxin which is immediately above means that you get the benefit pretty much anytime an enemy dies nearby. All of which makes some early combats ever so much easier!
That's all for now. I'll address the pros and cons of the mage skills if you want, but for now, I've blathered enough!
- shield warrior with livid (50% dmg reduction, 20% guard) / bodyguard (auto taunt), war cry (200% armor, 20% guard per enemy)
- twohand warrior with horn of valor (10% guard each attack for whole group, with accessoire nearly constant active)
- mage: barrier (5 sec upgrade), revive (on nightmare deaths can happen fast)
Now for some dmg:
- shield warrior takes bash + the one AOE cleave from the shield tree
- twohand warrior skills down to whirlwind / stun and also livid for 50% dmg increase later on
- mage: firemine and all cooldown skills like 0,5sec from basic attacks, 1 sec from casting
- rogue (Sera): all 4 dagger skills and Seras flask for 5 sec no cooldowns / no stamina costs, she
Fights:
- start with horn of valor from warrior + barrier from mage
- run with tank into enemies and activate warcry, livid, bodyguard
- place firemine with mage
- switch to rogue /Sera activate flask and spam the dagger skills
!!! you want to play the dmg dealer yourself because the AI uses skills very slowly
Equipment:
- warrior weapons with many offensive metal slots for +1,75% attack bonusses and armor with metal defensive slots (with shield, armor, helm it's possible to get the 80% melee dmg reduction for survial9
- mages / rogues just offensive stuff
Excellent suggestions all. One thing I didn't mention because I'd forgotten about it: if you should be so fortunate as to draw the Dancer's Axe as a Trials reward, your 2H Warrior suddenly turns into the Tasmanian Devil--just a killing machine on wheels. This is especially true if you find one of the Whirlwind Rings.
If you don't get it in the rewards chest, there's also a schematic for it which you get from one of the War Table missions, I forget which one.
EDIT: It's "Movran's Arrived!" which you get if you rescue the soldiers in the swamp and then exile the chieftain and his clan to Tevinter.
Yea, that is a powerful mage, and play's differently than the more tactical of the other 2. I think that was the class combo i used in my first complete game with sera, Solas and casandra as a party. Was a good group.
A mage, A rogue and an warrior and during the game a few more will be added.
So pick your choice.
For me I play a warrior and for good reason.
When the game realy starts you have the 3 classes to accompagny you as I just mentioned.
So when ever I go on a quest or whatever I use the Rogue as main char for battles sins he stays in the background to shoot. Working that way It means I got 2 warriors doing the actual battle and kills will be rapitly.
So you play what ever class you want but keep in mind that at some point you are facing the enemy alone.
Play every single location you can spot in the war room BEFORE going on a rampage run in the main story line and get your percs up. I do not mean your personal percs but the inqusition ones. You can gather allot of points by first going on a map tour before going for the story line. Why else do you think there is armor available at lvl 13-15? You can actualy reach that. ( I am at lvl 12 atm)
Mostly agree but the one thing I find is that--especially early in the game--the warriors tend to run right into those glyphs the rebel mages lay down and then they're dead.
But yeah...definitely scour the initial regions before the early-game Big Throwdown. I can easily get to double-digit levels even without shard-chasing and going to the Forbidden Oasis...which is why for a long time I played with "Take It Slow," and now I play with a mod that reduces your XP even more: for a while I was dialing my XP down by 70 percent (30 percent earned) and recently I've taken it a notch further with an 80 percent reduction (20 percent earned).
Thou thx my Tanks are bonkers, looking at u cass and blacky, i still managed to kill some. Feels like playing a single player MMO, but its actually well written and manages a fine line between high fantasy cheese and actually fun storylines.
Sera, Solas and Cass are my best decked out team. In the end it comes down to gear.
Ice spells kill my framerate thou. the optimization is so bad
Also, I like whirlwind two handed warriors with reaver and the two horn skills. Iron Bull works nice like this. Just whirlwind through big groups, buff when you can. Very simple.
My 2nd inquisitor was a sort of hybrid tank/dps by focusing on pommel strike with the pommel strike ring (was regularly doing 7K damage with a pommel strike at level 12), both livid and war cry to keep their guard up, and reaver abilities to do continual high damage. Being able to do two shouts that both raise guard let me exist with low health and not worry about death, so that my reaver abilities did more damage.
