There are a few minor errors in it and I wouldn't necessarily follow their advice on every little thing, but I say that as someone with several dozen playthroughs under his belt. For you, it's entirely adequate to the task at hand.
The one thing that is not entirely clear from the wiki walkthrough is that most things can only be discovered by pinging with the player sonar. If you are a controller guy like me, your thumb may get pretty sore from spamming the left stick! :-) I don't honestly remember what the equivalent key is if you're a KBM guy, sorry about that.
As to the secrets, nowadays I mostly ignore them along with the challenge coins. You can get all the court approval you need with the conversations you have with--
1. The noblewoman in the garden who's lost her ring;
2. The elderly gent who you find in one of the side rooms;
3. The Council of Heralds emissary who's wandering around the hallway and sometimes is to be found in a side room; and--most significantly;
4. The Comtesse de Chalons before and during your episode with her.
Some of the court-favored conversational options are only available if you have the appropriate perk, usually Nobility Knowledge, and I think there's also one or two you can invoke with either background or race-specific dialogue options.
There are also several opportunities to gain court approval through your actions. All of this is laid out in detail in the wiki walkthrough so I won't repeat what they say, also partly in an effort to avoid spoilers.
As I said I mostly ignore the secrets and the challenge coins. FWIW I've never gotten all the secrets or all the coins, so don't dwell too much on that.
I also wouldn't worry too much about the court approval losses you experience while trespassing in the palace's off-limits areas. The losses are slight in comparison to the gains so it really doesn't signify except at the very end if you are trying to obtain the "Belle of the Ball" achievement (end with 100 percent court approval), for which the necessary steps are--again--laid out in the wiki walkthrough.
Hope this helps!
Yeah, I got through it over the course of a couple hours but the boss fight is too high level and I can't leave to grind for it so it I have to find a save abour 3 hours back, grind for a few days to get to the boss's level, and do the entire quest all over again. :( Thank you though, that got me through it but I'm probably shelving the game again after that. That was so tedious, I don't want to do it again. lol This is the fourth time I've set the game aside, I hope Dragon Age: DreadWolf has better quest design.
When you say "the boss fight," are you referring to the big fight in the palace with the rift and Florianne's archers? Or did you mean the final fight with Florianne herself?
Sorry to hear you had problems right at the end. What level were you at? Are you playing on normal? Are you using any of the trials?
The rift fight is tough but I can usually get past it by a judicious application of regen potions and remembering (it's easy to forget you have it) to use my rift power to zap some of the tougher demons, which for me usually means the despair guys. That cold ray is nasty!
The fight in the palace gardens against Florianne can be a bear but I find it's actually easier than the rift fight, the more so that Florianne is something of a glass hammer: she can sure dish it out but she can't really take it.
If all else fails you can always dial down the difficulty level--the game adjusts dynamically, so if you're getting hammered at X level, you can just reload an earlier save--the game usually autosaves right before fights, and certainly before the big ones like these--and dial it down to X-1 level.
Anyhow, regardless, sorry it didn't do it for you. I'll admit I kinda speedrun my way through the Winter Palace these days, but I've rung all the changes on the mission over the years and now it's just a question of what outcome I want and whether I think I'm up for the fight with Florianne.
As I am sure you are aware, you don't have to fight Florianne if your court approval is above 85 and that's easy to achieve. But if you do, you get better loot and more XP, and there's no real consequences to your choice: the Empire becomes your ally regardless of who's running the place.
