However, if you play on SteamOS and not on a Windows Installation, the Controller does not work.
You can play it with a Keyboard/Mouse Fake Workaround by using one of the Community Control Schemes available. But be warned, this is far from optimal. There is no way at the moment to get any Controller working when playing on Linux Operating Systems. It also do not work if you use an external controller. Basically completely forget to play with Controller support at all on your stock Steam Deck.
At this point I would advise you not to buy it, unless you are fine with the problems described, or if you actually want to play with a real Keyboard and Mouse. Chances are very low to get an actual fix from the developers. Its the same problem if you buy it on the EA App directly and trying to launch it from there. Same thing.
If you have Windows on your SteamDeck however, you can get the Controller to work with third party tools. I wrote about this some days ago: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1222690/discussions/0/3805027266433975259/
Dropping to low settings and limiting the fps to 40, and still the fps dips are very noticeable.
I cant speak for the endgame fights, but I tested a lot of the initial fights, and the bigger first fight against the boss, and it did run flawlessly on 60fps. I did use FSR tho.
Also, its now possible to get the native controller to work also on SteamOS:

Can confirm the controller patch, works flawless. Just installed the game yesterday.
Also the patch is on 1.0.2 now https://github.com/cammoore1/DAI-proton-ge-custom/releases
Um...because the primary audience was also the "Steam Deck does not exist and won't exist for another several years" market?
Back then this was a very common problem for a lot of games, different input system and drivers made it complicated to implement. Since the game is not patched anymore and the engine is old and garbage, there is just no reason to invest any time on making this compatible.
But to be fair the problem here is only Proton/SteamInput. It would work on a standard Windows Installation with any sort of external controller. But it just doesnt work under Proton.
A fix from Valve would also be possible. Its not that only EA would be able to fix this. But there is no interest, there is not really a high demand for this to be fully compatible with the steam deck, and also not marketed as such.
