Can Not Seal Rift
In the beginning of the game fighting the first Boss I can seal the rift to allow damage to the boss.
Then more demons come which we kill however after this when the Boss gains armour again I can not seal the rift ?
Do I need to do something first or stand in a particular spot ?
What am I doing wrong ?

It's been a very long time since I played DAI but I seem to remember that you do have to get what I think is very close to the rift to close it. In addition I seem to remember that you have to kill all of the spawned demons or at least the toughest ones before you can close it down.

Then again (being in my 70's with my memory not what it used to be) It is quite possible that I am wrong.

Your best bet for an instant answer to your question is to google it.

The Pride Demon--the Big Guy--is invulnerable to damage while he has Guard--those things that look like metal plates that cover his health bar. You can restore his vulnerability by using your mark to weaken the rift. You need to be standing fairly close to the rift, not moving, and not under attack: you'll know you're OK when the rift has a prompt that says "Weaken Rift" or some such--if you're using an XBox controller it will also show the (A) button.

Press the button and it will take a few seconds to work--unfortunately if you're attacked while in medias res you will have to start over, obviously after dealing with whatever's attacking you. Presumably you've already had some practice with this with the smaller rifts in the valley.

You cannot seal the rift until the Big Guy is dead or nearly so. Since he restores his shielding periodically this might take a while. I'd say with best play you can probably do it in 2-3 cycles but it takes a while to get used to the rhythm of the battle.

None of the other, smaller demons matter, except insofar as they will distract your people and keep you busy while you're attempting to weaken the rift.

Once the Big Guy's been weakened enough, Cass will shout something like "The demon is weakened! Use your mark to close the rift! Do it NOW !!!" In fact at this point there is no real hurry, but just do as she says and it will end the encounter.

As far as tactics go, try to stay away from the demon if you can: those lightning whips pack a serious punch and can one-shot you if you aren't tough enough...which is mostly the case unless you're a warrior.

You start in front of the Big Guy who in turn starts in front of the rift. I generally attack the Big Guy once and then run counterclockwise around the tower-like structure that's behind the rift: in other words, run past the tower to the right--the demon's left--and then circle around.

The Big Guy always makes his first move by moving away from the tower and toward the corner of the arena that is behind and to your right relative to your starting position, so try to run behind him as he moves.

Once you've run three-quarters of the way around the tower you should be able to peek out from behind the corner and be able to hit the rift while maintaining maximum distance from the Big Guy.

After that, his movements are less predictable and of course there's also the smallboys he calls in, so at that point just do your best. Nevertheless, keeping out of his vision cone is preferable, since anytime he hits you with the lightning whips your life is in danger.

Hope this helps.

To seal the rift, you absolutely do need to stand in just the right spot - pretty much directly below the rift, and maybe a slight bit to the side - there's a few red stones on the ground that i use as a reference.

With that said, this part of the game does glitch/bug so you cannot complete it - and sometimes only a reload will recover.

But other times, this will bug/glitch in a way that a pause-then-unpause (like bringing up a menu) will sometimes fix the bug/glitch, but not always.

Note, the extra little demons will automatically be aggro'd by you - thus you can anticipate their actions.

TIPS:
Be sure to keep Pride Demon aggro'd by Cassandra, and keep her in a corner hopefully facing the Demon away from the damage dealers - When the lesser demons appear, you can kite the lesser demons while you have the other two focus on, and damage, the lesser demons.

With a plan and some attention, it all works well... unless it bugs/glitches. Luck

I had this issue when I started playing. I solved the issue by either dying and reloading to a previous checkpoint or reloading a save right before the boss fight. Then it let me seal the rift during the fight.
