Best companions?

What is the best companion build? I suppose if i dont want to play warriror so i take cassandra as tank, then some mage for support and when i am going to play archer who next?

Honestly, there's no magic formula. They give you one of each at the start: warrior Cass, mage Solas, and twanger-rogue Varric--though you can actually convert him to a stabby-rogue if you so choose, much as you can rework Cass from sword-and-shield to two-handed.

There's two more of each class that you can recruit. So you can wind up with all the variants if you so choose.

But honestly I've gotten through the game with all sorts of permutations and combinations. Nowadays I don't recruit anyone I don't have to and it's entirely possible to get all the way through the final fight in the main game--not in Trespasser--with the Original Three. But they even have a way to deal with that so you are never left with fewer party members than you need.

The only fly in the ointment is that occasionally you encounter environmental obstacles--locks for rogues, barriers for mages, and frangible walls for warriors--that you can't get through without the appropriate class in your party. But that doesn't happen in any of the main quests, leaving aside some loot that you might not get to.

If you are playing a Rogue then I would take two mages and Cassandra.

Blackwall and Cassandra are exellent Tank. Take whoever you want really. Most peoples go with whoever they like the most. I usually Take Sera, Cassandra and BW (who I switch with Solas here and there for conversations points in Hinterland). (I play a Mage).

Skill wise Blackwell is the better tank, Casandra does more damage with her Templar powers. Pick who you like, the game is playable with any combo of characters. My favorite run though was Sara, Casandra and Solas, i ran that twice with both a Mage and a shield Warrior which was interesting having two of those on the same team. though in hind site i should of gone two handed but it worked even if it made fights take a bit longer.

"Best" is not super important while learning.

But, there are situations when you NEED a Mage and situations when you NEED a rogue.

So, always have at least One Mage ("Energize") and One Rogue ("Pick Lock") in group.

AI Mage build, imo, should be jack-of-all trades. Solas AI seems to be better at protecting the group than Dorian AI, and i can't stand Vivienne. So, Solas lets me focus on my toon.

Rogue build is always Archer - very high damage, standoff. Varric is limited in damage because of his weapon choice - only Bianca - upgrades help, but i can usually build a higher damage Bow... so, i prefer Sera or Cole as archer rogue (but Varric banter can be fun).

In addition, having a Tank that Aggros the enemy is, imo, also a "NEED".

So, if you agree, always have a Tank (either Cassandra or Blackwall) - build them the same. After aggro skills, "Horn of Valor" with "Fortifying Blast" ftw. Upgrade to 2H after Lvl 10.

So, now you have your 3 party team - Tank, Mage, Rogue.

Now be who you want...

Rogue Archer is the highest DPS.

Mage is in the second tier DPS, but fits into the story well (Mage Rebellion) & has good CC

Rogue DW is in the low second tier of DPS, and requires lots of handling (Stealth moving to tgt)

Melee Fighter is supposed to be fun for some, somewhere in the low second tier of DPS, but i've never played. Just run with Iron Bull in your group if you want to experience a good Melee Fighter.

So, ur group, with you, is already Tank, Mage, Rogue (you).

That meets the minimum criteria i described above.

Now, you can actually have some fun with who you add, so i'd suggest you try them all

In each new location, the "Camp" allows you to Switch Party Members, so, try all configs.

But personally, i usually run with 2 Rogues or 2 Mages - depending on which one i am - but i do bring Iron Bull sometimes also. 2 Rogues is devastating DPS (Long Shot w/ Eagle Eye).

Or you could always go Varic, Sera and Cole and play a mage. He creeps me out though so i typically swap him with solas, though Vvian isn't bad either, I haven't used the other guy yet outside of a couple missions, but if you like fire go for it.

About the only fight i really think having a true tank helps are the dragon fights, most of the other stuff what ever you want typically can work.

Play what you like, its only difficult in the beginning because of weak weapons and few class abilities.. By end game, there are builds that can solo every thing.. Specifically Knight enchanter, Reaver, or tempest.

Get BVLL 2H/taunt for hard fights early game with your mage... take a rogue/mage so you don't have to bother with doorlocks/heals... AND then become a Knight Enchanter for melee/ranged/tank hybrid sweetness.

That is let other mage take a spot for dispel / heals - you don't want that lol.

Do what you prefer. The only difference is one talent tree (kind of sad for a RPG). My knight enchanter (very OP by the way, crazy tank and DD in one) goes with Cassandra, Sera and Solas. I think they are the most interesting characters. I would go with Cole for more dmg but I don´t like the character. Assassin skills are nice though.

I usually bring along one of each
My character currently is a rogue archer and I always have solas in my party because he's my favorite. I've been switching between bull/viv/blackwall/varric/cole this playthrough...
The combo I've been using the most though is solas, bull, cole :))
