In my many plays, I've never once been offered an option or a path for that. Not even when I had the right romance, or when I completed the lore-haul that allows you to know ahead of time about You-Know-Who.

I suspect the intent is to take the Inquisitor off the table for the next installment, but of course they could always find a way around that.

well if by off the table you mean not make him protagonist ..let's think about Hawke ..alive and kickin even in inquisition and with everything at her/him ..at least everything we can see XD

Simply refuse to click on trespasser war table operation and you can forever remain young and pure protagonist

:-) Trust me, if the Inquisitor is carried over to DA4, they'll have an answer to that too. If nothing else there will be a default outcome in the default world state in the DA Keep...

Sure. As a non-controllable NPC who mostly exists as a bridge to the Wardens. And, yeah...that's exactly the sort of role I expect the Inquisitor to play in DA4.

I'm too late to the thread, since most had given an answer that Inquisitor will loose hand as the only way to keep him/her alive. I imagine it'd be interesting choices like if Solas with low approval refused to help, Inquisitor rejected Solas' offer and died or even more dramatic way of Inquisitor using all the power in magic hand to kill Solas. An attempt kills the Herald, but Solas is mortally wounded and retreats through Eluvian with heavy scarring like when Morrigan was stabbed and fell through. Another choice would be if Solas was romanced then Herald would loose hand and walk through portal with him and it'd at least feel like a rpg choice as in Witch Hunt when in unique ending Warden could go with Morrigan.

The ending slide seems to imply everyone retiring, despite new world threat being present until another post-ending scene with Inquisitor looking for Solas in Tevinter. Will he/she go there themselves or send someone? I think the next hero could be agent of Inquisition sent to stop Solas or recruited into the Inquisition or Tevinter ally of Inquisition to stop Solas. Who knows for sure?

well might be ...but i dont think that next protagonist will be agent of inquisition since you also have option to disband it ..if it be to import saves ..the protagonist so it will be just a new character as it was already mentioned and judjing by the neext dragon age game title it will be about Solas

Yeah, no doubt its going to be about Solas since the game is called DA: Fen'Harel/Dread Wolf, though I'd call Solas Fenris'Harel but actual Fen'Harel.
I mean, even if disbanded there'd be agents loyal to Inquisitor or Leliana and work for them instead of Inquisition. Though, I would really hope I'd have nothing to do with it or the Wardens in next game and let main character be its own with an option to join a faction if wanted to like with Hawke in DAII. I have speculation it'll have same system as in DAI, there will be some background for character and some prologue similar to Inquisition to jumpstart to main plot, of course I also hope illusions we'll have origin stories for every race and class instead of just pointless mentions.
I also speculate that either Wardens will recruit the main character or it'll be a Tevinter Magister that leads a resistance movement against Archon out of some trouble and set on quest to stop Solas, but it's a maybe. I do know that one companion is confirmed to be a Grey Warden, so it makes the former much likely possibility that Magister saving new hero from some misfortune also because GWs wield more power like Right of Conscription.

Well unless the 6th blight is comin' i say grey wardens are pretty useless...even in DAI they were a bit...i just hope that inquisitor or our romance will return and we can talk about their relationship bcs i so loved those dialogue from Leliana about she and Grey warden

I hope not, Tevinter Imperium is far away so it's better if all characters from the rest of Thedas will be left alone except those that went or are connected to Imperium. I don't really want fanservice or flanderization of characters, it's best to make new ones for the next game and focus entirely on the given region than have Inquisitor return again like Hawke.

From the ending it seems that Cassandra either rebuilds the seekers or becomes the new Divine, Varric will be the new Viscount of Kirkwall and Leliana, Cullen retire. It's best to leave these characters be, I think Leliana was poorly portrayed in Inquisition and I don't wish for more Origins characters to be butchered or flanderized. Hawke either dies or survives but is irrelevant after DAII, her/his part was only solving the Grey Warden mystery in Inquisition, it wonders me why you want him/her back seeing as Hawke is not as popular as Warden or Inquisitor. I think Morrigan may return, Solas is confirmed to return so only one character will be recurring, rest is speculation. Again, I'm not sure why you want these characters to return since ending in Inquisition has everyone retire for good. What will be a reason to travel to foreign country hundreds of miles away from Orlais or Ferelden?

Well, they will probably keep the keep, cause save import feature would just create a stream of bugs, inconsistencies and twisted stories
