Ideal Keybinding Keyboard K+M Config Settings
I did a bunch of searching around the net and it seems like everybody says this game is better played with a controller but I only think that is because it's just easier then finding a comfy good layout. If you haven't played the game the keybindings can feel overwhelming/confusing. I have nothing against controllers but I just don't want to play a game like this with a controller. After going back and forth and mapping keys I found a great layout I thought I'd share. This involves using a mouse with side buttons. It works really well and is comfy to use. Anything that is left blank (basic attack/auto attack) is automatically default set by the game with mouse buttons and taught in the beginning tutorial, so don't worry about it. If you don't want to hold Right Mouse button to move around/Camera... then swap the camera turn buttons on to the Move Left/Right Buttons otherwise copy my bindings as shown.

Move Forward: W
Move Backward: S
Camera Turn Left: A
Camera Turn Right: D
Move Left:
Move Right:
Toggle Auto-Run: B (far because don't really use it)
Walk (Toggle): Caps Lock
Sprint: Shift
Jump: Space
Interact: Top side Mouse button
Search: Q
Cycle Targets: Tab
Basic Attack:
Auto-Attack (SP):
Pause/Unpause: CTRL
Tactical Camera: ALT
Move Forward (Tactical Camera): W
Move Backward (Tactical Camera): S
Turn Left (Tactical Camera):
Turn Right (Tactical Camera):
Move Left (Tactical Camera): A
Move Right (Tactical Camera): D
Pan Tactical Camera:
Attack My Target: C (easy to access for controlling party)
Hold Position: X (easy to access for controlling party)
Clear Commands: Z (easy to access for controlling party)
Disengage: V (easy to access for controlling party)
Ability Slots 1-8: 1-8
Quick Heal: E
Potion Slot 1: R
Potion Slot 2: T
Call Mount/Dismount: Y
Quest Map: M
Journal: J
Inventory: I
Character Record: U
Toggle Mouse Look: Bottom Side Mouse Button (great for toggling back and forth)
Sheathe/Unsheathe Weapon: \

I know this is nearly two years ago that you posted this, but this really helps.

I have a steam controller and old xbox 360 controller, but I own the game through origin, and I can't use my steam controller even when I add a non steam game to my steam library. And my old x360 controller is giving up the ghost, going out slowly. So ... I'll be switching to kb/m. Thanks for your inputs!

I think the ONE thing that'd make this better is, if instead of having to use 5-8 for those abilities, it'd be great to actually just hold down right mouse and then hit 1-4, OR, the mouse wheel to do the same. This one change, along with all your keybindings, would be enough to make this more than viable.
personally, I changed very little. The only thing I keep doing is hitting Space for the tactical view (both previous games used it since jumping was not a thing yet). I do hate how you can't pause and issue commands without using the tactical view though.
I put the two potions slots on two side mouse buttons, and made the Auto Attack (SP) on R. Tac View keys I just switched AD and QE around. Aside from that, honestly, it's not much different from other RPGs when it comes to keybindings The V key has been used before, but I do wish they'd allow you to use Left Click or have an actual interact keybinding.

Personally I'd prefer shift or alt myself. With when this game was made, I'm pretty surprised they didn't allow it. Makes it seem like they intended the player to use the Tac-View constantly. Not even truly sure why they ever made that a thing. It was needed in either Origins or II imo. I ignore it and play the the old "Pause and give commands" style of the PS3, but that's just what I'm used to I guess. I dislike the Tac-View thing because, while it's meant to give you a larger view since the battles take place in "larger" areas (Honestly they really don't though. The world is more open than before, but fights still end up limited to an area about the same size as before.) I find it more distracting being able to see that much.
