Another RPG I would look into is Divinity Original Sin 2.
You have a full party but only control a single character. you have a standard attack you can spam and abilities with cooldowns that also need Stamina/Mana to trigger.
Its definitely not dependant on any great player skills like rolling, evading, or anything like that.
Really, feels very like MMO combat.
Like a mix between DA 1 and 2 combats systems.
You can also go into a tactical bird eye view to pause and give commands to your team members.
But thats really only nessesarcy on the higher difficulties, on easy/normal you can just spam your attacks/skills without much thought.
Overall i would say the combat is "ok" , its not amazing in any form but its flashy, fast and not very complex.
The world exploration, quests and so on definitely are the focus point of Inquisition.
Combat exist but its only a small part of the gameplay in my opinion.
Yeah but someone asking about the combat with their gaming history/ rpg experience is most likely going to be playing on the higher difficulties which is where the games combat really shines and it actually does get tactical.
Inquisition actually has an interesting approach to combat, it's not actually action oriented, is more a combination of old school isometric rpg and action, is definitely dynamic though. It's mostly party based, while you control only one character it's how the team works that makes the difference as there's an emphasis on combo (which are explained in the Skill Tree which types of skill combines with).
It's definitely above average, most importantly is a very original approach.
Since you aren't new to rpg I'd advise to up the difficulty, Normal is in reality a cakewalk as it's mostly for experiencing the story and doesn't require any real thinking, while Nightmare is totally a different league as Resistances and Weaknesses play a role; Hard is somewhat in the middle, you can change difficulty at any time if you wish.
What I'd really recommend beside difficulty setting is to switch Friendly Fire on as the game is balanced around it, without it positioning and many skills are not important at all; most people that considered the combat shallow at release didn't take this in consideration, which is a huge factor
There are also two options that are considered a must in the community, which are Even Ground and Take it Slow, the former scaling all enemies to at least your level (they tend to be one or two lower levels than the party) and the latter halving the xp gain in half, as Even Ground will net you more, without this option you'll likely be max level somewhere mid game before even touching the DLC.
The good thing about DAI is can be as hard or easy as you want thanks to the Trials options, the mechanics are balanced to work in different ways.
OH and lets not forget the modding community. Nexus has a LOT of mods for the game, so I'm sure if OP is REALLLLY wanting to ramp things up, there's probably mods that can make it even harder!
Good call!
Oh and also they banned me for saying that on their forums.
Welcome! For the skills don't worry about it, those you mention are all pretty much among the first ones in the various skill trees, so depending by your class you'll be able to get them in the first hours; you may definitely want to check the Rogue class, it's the most action oriented. The tac cam can be useful at times, but it's really needed, the AI is pretty good on its own, just tweak their behaviour (is very straightforward now). When you are fighting there's a lock on option, that will change the camera to more a 'traditional' 3rd person style.
You hate it yet you can't stop commenting. You alright there?
