no idea what causes it
It seems an issue since a long time. The only thing which you can do is to me too the post and hope that EA someday will fix it for people which suffer from it.
Best advice is to clean out both regularily, there are some storage boxes where you can put some of the thing away. And if you have tens or even hundrets of produce in the fridge, sell them and harvest new ones if needed.
My Sims end up with a lot of produce in their inventories/fridges, because I can't stop myself from planting and gardening regardless what household I'm playing. So, I searched for mods which let me store food items and the best suited for me is icemunmun's Instaplate Lunch Box. It's small, moveable in Live Mode and you can put it in a Sims inventory
