The problem with all of them is that they offer nothing unique. They just try to copy the Sims and only the boring real life simulation stuff. It lacks excitement, it lacks the more chaotic and surreal elements that are too sparse in Sims 4.
It also lacks any promise of characters with more varied personalities.
I think what a solid alternative requires is it's own identity, offering some things that the Sims is not offering and never will unless it proves really popular with a competitor.
A different setting could be a solid way to establish a different identity.
Like maybe it could just be 90's to play it safe, but really embrace it with the soundtrack, styles, available tech and everything.
Or maybe setting it in Victorian times, the 50's or maybe in medieval times, the future, in space, medieval fantasy, etc.
Any of that would already make it very different, and would also naturally allow for very different expansions.
Like in victorian times there could be expansions focused on the wild west, victorian horror, silent movies, vaudeville, the circus, etc.
Another thing that could set a competitor apart is a higher age rating, like 16+ or so.
Having alcohol and smoking, and other stuff like that. Letting your people really hit rock bottom, also be capable of killing each other. Kind of like what kind of stuff can be done in Sims Medieval, it has all that.
A game like this could offer a lot more challenge, which sims 3 and 4 are lacking.
I am sure that there will be Micro Transactions. I do not doubt that at all. I have noticed with any game that I have played the is being done by Korea, Japan, China ,,,, there is always micro transaction which people think they save but in the long haul you can spend more than you would for a subscription monthly. They make great games and I am sure the characters are going to be fantastic from what I have seen. Maybe they will actually talk so we know what they are saying and up to unlike Sims when they gibber something and take off and you find they are pregnant and you did not want one. T he Goths and the Landgraabs are becoming baby factories of late. I see more and more games using the micro transactions.
Last thing anyone wants to see is another Concord.
Most of Sims 4 expansion packs are filler. More clothes, hairstyles, furniture and such, but if you are lucky there's like 5 objects offering actual new interactions in a 40 euro pack.
It is clear to see in the advertisement of each of these packs, like 2 out of 4 selling points are just about new styles, not new gameplay.
Like the upcoming businesses and hobby pack. Which adds a single hobby. (pottery) Neat to see tattoo artist added as a new business, but it is not a hobby.
I would expect to see like a dozen new hobbies added to the game for that kind of money, in depth hobbies too so not just one object with a few interactions.
Rhalius, I know what you mean. There are many of those DLC's at $40 that are not worth what they cost. I am not sure that the Business with Tattoo and Pottery is. I think having the Tattoo artist and shop is great if it is not like say the Dining Out or Spa Day and other than you putting them in each game you make it is not there. I think when they do something like that the original place should always be in the game after release.. My new worlds never see them unless I actually build them in the game and set them up. Plus there just isn't enough content to warrant the $40 price. but alas we shell out the dough and keep right not lol
