The Sims™ 4

The Sims™ 4

How worth it are the expansion packs?
I hop onto Sims from time to time. Play for a bit, get bored, then come back after a few months.
I've been eyeing the expansion packs for the game because it looked like it would give me some more options with this game, however most expansion packs cost as much as a new game and simply watching YouTube videos isn't convincing me so far.
So I figured I'd get a personal response... As someone who likes The Sims 4, with zero DLCs to my name, but gets bored from the base game, are the expansion DLCs worth buying? Or will it not matter because I'm already finding the base game boring on repeat sessions?

Some of the dlc content can be great, others eh, its really almost a pick and choose as to what benefits your playstyle, I really just like making sims in CAS, I never like actually playing a sim after I spend like four hours getting them perfect!!
Namely "Get to Work" and "Seasons" are a good start, and useful to have, but please look at points below first.
Though I wonder if it would be a good use of your money as some of the dlc is quite buggy and has issues from time to time, so there is that to keep in mind.

Some suggestions before making purchases:

One can sail the high seas
(I do not endorse this, but this is an option in this day and age, at your own risk) (Do not ask me how to do this either)

Try some free cc content, some creators really make some great stuff!

Hope this helps!

I have some expansion packs (kinda a lot acctually) and i rlly enjoy them. But a rlly important thing: buy them on sale! Cause else it's not worth 40 euros or dollars. There's a holiday sale going on right now, so i would buy one!

I played all of the expansion packs. I enjoy playing vampires, celebrities. city living and parenthood packs, I also like seasons, cats and dogs and horses packs. The rest are ok, but not really needed. Tiny home, for rent and decorator packs are good if you like building. There is a fun expansion pack about eco life which is fun to play if you like this topic. The vacation expansion packs like snowy escape and jungle adventure are fine, but kinda one time game play, but you will enjoy it for multiple hours. The Strangewil and Batu is one time game-play packs, I wouldn't recommend them unless you get them really cheap or for free)))

I just play the Sims I make. I wanna stay on one Sim family for multiple sessions to see them grow and whatnot. I'm hoping these expansions will give my Sims more stuff to do.

I think I'll settle for the Cats and Dogs expansion, because I own a cat and a dog irl so I think it'd be fun to try to get them both in-game
I also wanted to settle on "parenthood" because my sim is actually having a baby soon but I am not sure if I should take advantage of the sale and go for both?

Personally, I really like the Parenthood pack a lot because it gives you additional interactions with your Sims' kids and some really cool family gameplay features. Sometimes they will ask their parents for advice, you can make them do school projects or work at a creativity desk (the pictures they draw are really cute)... and pretty much everything the parents do or say has an effect on the kids and their characters. They can gain emotional control, responsibility, empathy, good manners and conflict resolution - or not, depending on how you raise them. If you make them help with household chores, they'll become more responsible. If you let them belch or fart, their manners suffer. Oh, and you get a Parenting skill... and that's just a few things I can come up with off the top of my head.

I'LL TAKE THEIR ENTIRE STOCK

it depends, which is probably not the answer you are looking for but it does depend on what you do in game. Sims 4 has multiple things you can focus on from building to character play etc. For me the DLCs make the game. I am a huge fan of the actual game play in Strangerville with in depth mystery solving goals and roleplay interactions (I also usually play horror games and love messing around with the occult expansions). A friend of mine only does house building and loves the DLCs for giving her options to do that. Ive seen other people love the legacy challenges and roleplay as a family so certain DLCs that allow for that really help their game play. So it comes down to what it is that you like to do in game. If you're curious, I say go for it and grab one thats on sale that seems to focus on how you like to play.

Get them on sale. Yes, they do add a lot to the game. I have quite a few. It depends on what you like, but the ones I would personally recommend are Seasons, City Living, Cottage Living, and Go to Work. Cats and Dogs is nice too if you like animals.

personally, i love the DLC content. Esp dogs & cat one!

if you get them on sale maybe they are ok, I wouldn't pay more than $10 for any of them.

I have horses, romance and the landlord DLC left to buy.
Not feeling like getting off my butt so I can reach for my wallet for any of them, even at 60% off.
I'd buy DLC with
  • a sims 3 style time machine, where you can make children in the past or future and skip the whole botched up baby/toddler Sims 4 boondoggle
  • Tiberium and a clone machine that works most of the time (like Sims 3) and not less than half the time like sims 4
  • An open world where you can actually play an 8 sim household instead of giving up on 7 sims to play the 1 sim who's off the lot.
  • one where friendship and romance were not always 100% equal
  • Plumbots, not servos, and not simbots.

But they die in the game, and you're reminded of how that hurts in real life.
Sorts of like how in the high school DLC and they pester the player into going to the Prom, which in real life was a horror show.

I tried playing The Sims 4 without Seasons briefly, but I do not like it without Seasons. You get cold and hot weather outfits in basegame for example, but are useless without Seasons. I personally enjoy Seasons overall and have commonly seen before the argument that Seasons should have been basegame as well. Seasons I would recommend buying eventually at some point, but the rest are more optional.

Even Life & Death despite being the most popular expansion pack right now on Steam is not as much of a must have as Seasons despite Seasons not adding a new world. Get Together (because it has the largest world of any expansion pack) and Cottage Living are very close to being must have expansion packs as well similar to Life & Death but the latter of which is not on sale yet for 50% or 60% discounts because it is still new. Honorable mentions are Island Living, City Living (the world has interesting apartments and world is big but the apartments are sometimes bugged at least for me), Cats & Dogs (I like the world, build mode, and what it has from CaS, but the pets seem to be less fun to play with than pets from The Sims 3), Snowy Escape (I like this expansion pack and it overall has good reviews on Steam but some people do not like it), and Growing Together (one of my personal favorites but not everyone likes family gameplay and it might be a little underrated on Steam) when it comes to other expansion packs that are good.
