it's probably just because EA is too lazy to make the sims 4 boot from steam

You're missing the fact that The Sims are owned by EA. And their launcher is Origin. It's on the shop page - the stuff in orange on the right.
Says third party EULA, third party DRM and third party account necessary.

Once you've jumped through all the hoops once (unless you want to return the game) you can start the game from your Steam library without logging into Origin manually. However, it will always actually lauch through Origin.

origin used to be a company that published legendary games such as the ultima series, now a days they are just a launcher for EA games

This presents other issues too when trying to purchase bundles between stores... I can't get discounts on steam for DLC I own so I'd have to buy another key for a DLC I already have on origin because it can't apply the discount for the already purchased DLC. Origin actively ♥♥♥♥♥ up steams deals. I stopped buying Sims DLC via Origin as soon as steam got access to sims 4. straight up because I don't think the games are worth their asking price so I'd rather tip 30% to steam as a middle finger to EA.

? Not sure what exactly you mean. You can buy the DLC from both Steam or Origin and get discounts if they have them ... ?
And why would you want to buy something you own again?

I think Origin Systems and EA's Origin are completely unrelated entities.

origin was bought out by EA after ultima 7 then they went and made ultima 9, 22 years later and i still get cold sweats when i think about that game

Origin Systems that made Ultima series was dissolved in 2004. EA's Origin platform was released in 2011. They are totally different team. EA just uses the name because they already own "Origin" trademark.

Nobody here defended EA's politics. Dunno where you got that idea - surely not from the written words in this thread ....
I just explained what was what, since you asked what you were missing. Their politics are what they are. You want to play Sims, you need Origin. Been that way since Sims 3.
No idea why you can't refund, should be possible if you did it right after realizing it doesn't work as you want.
Anyway, they didn't spring anything on you without telling you first. You just didn't read it. And that's indeed YOUR problem.

Yeah, you need an Origin account (pretty simple to set up) but then it's just one click on Steam launches everything. Not sure what your problem is. I already had an Origin account because Dragon Age.

No he's right ... you all are wrong.... if it was full proof if there were no bugs if EA's origin didnt have to run in compatibility mode... If the DLC was transferable. If the game didnt bug out every windows/EA update .... I have never played a game i hate so much to start up, that i love to play..... Now i just leave the game running and i dont care how unstable it gets i do my best not to restart the game for fear of S H I T T Y update from idiots that can't code properly... FACT

this is correct
EA used pressuring lawsuits to ruin origin systems with some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ techsuits

who knows what Ultima 8 really would have been like under pure Richard Garriott command (sans the EA influence)
