To the question: there is no downside, as you are getting more simoleons from it and you can paint more masterpieces, potentially several of them in a row. it's not even a drop in the ocean by selling dozens for some hard earned simoleons for your sim household.
unfortunately the pricing per masterpiece is variable. sometimes they can be really high value monsters (potentially as high as 20k or more), other times they are barely more than typical excellent! quality (between 4k-7k generally).
